Homemade Chicken Gravy Mix

In the past, I would have a variety of seasoning mixes

or gravy packets stashed in the cupboard. It just made it so easy to throw a meal together. Once I learned how easy it was to make my own, I don’t have to buy the pre-packaged stuff anymore. Yay, me!

I wasn’t going to post another gravy mix for a couple of more weeks, but….

Now that my open kitchen bookshelves/pantry are so nice and orderly, thanks to my Easy DIY Labels, that empty Chicken Gravy Mix jar looked pretty pathetic sitting among all of the full jars.

So here is another easy gravy mix recipe for you to try.

Homemade Chicken Gravy Mix

Homemade Chicken Gravy Mix Ingredients

This recipe makes about 2 cups (1 pint), which is the equivalent of 6 packages. This is my favorite brand of broth base (pictured below), because it’s a fine powder. But you could use any instant bouillon.

If you use a lot of gravy in your household, this recipe can easily be doubled. I would suggest that if you do make a double batch, mix the ingredients in a bowl and then transfer the mix to your jar.

I use a quart jar for plenty of shaking room.

Homemade Chicken Gravy Mix Broth Base

  • 1 1/3 cup powdered instant milk
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 3 Tablespoons instant chicken bouillion
  • 1/4 teaspoon sage
  • 1/8 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper

Measure ingredients into a jar and ‘shake, rattle & roll’ that jar until everything is well blended. A couple of minutes will work.

I was being super careful when filling that jar, but without that wide mouth funnel, I would have that flour everywhere!

Homemade Chicken Gravy Mix in a Jar

To use the mix:

Shake the jar well before each use.

Melt 1 to 2 teaspoons of butter in a pan over medium heat, add 1 cup water and 3 to 4 tablespoons chicken gravy mix to the pan. Stir for 2 to 3 minutes until thickened.

Super Simple!

Tip: Use masking tape to make a little “directions label” to put on the back of the jar, or taped on the underside of the jar lid. I’ve done it both ways and either works well.

Not including the cost of the thyme, sage and pepper (which is only pennies), this gravy mix comes in at $1.25 for the recipe, or 21¢ per “package” equivalent.

You’re going to love this! Promise!

  1. Thank you for sharing this. I’m looking on more ways to save more money over the years and the gravy packets are getting a little pricey now.
