The Wonders of Oregano Oil

Essential Oils are all the rage these days. I had been reading about their benefits for a couple of years before I finally decided to jump on the bandwagon. Well, not exactly jump. More like stuck my toe in the water. I just wasn’t too sure about the effectiveness of using oils, but I had several friends who swore by using oils for medicinal purposes. Actually, my first bottle of the real stuff was gifted to me by a dear friend. So here I am….a convert.

Oregano Oil is a Natural Alternative to Antibiotics

It is used to treat both bacterial infections and fungal infections, Essential Oil Bottle, Wonders of Oregano Oil, haphazardhomemaker.comcandida, inflammation, gastrointestinal disorders, urinary tract infections, parasites and viruses, in addition to many other aliments.

It’s also considered a potent antioxidant, a powerful antihistamine and has been used to help treat breast cancer. Made me wonder if it could possibly be helpful in treating other cancers. I found this link, which indicates that it is one of the oils that seems to be promising!

Sounds like it can cure whatever ails you…

And it might, but I’m not a physician, so please don’t take this as medical advice. PLEASE research and make sure you are fully aware that just because Essential Oils are natural, that doesn’t mean that there are no risks involved. It is possible to overdose and cause kidney or liver damage.

Oregano oil use is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, babies and young children.

I have personally used it to successfully treat a deep chest cold that a potent name brand decongestant wouldn’t break up, and another time for a recurring UTI that a prescribed antibiotic did not cure. In both cases, within two or three days, I was already feeling much better. I was totally convinced and have since started picking up more oils.

Oregano Essential Oil or Oil of Oregano

When I first started buying bottles of oil, I didn’t know there was a difference between the two, and I would buy the cheaper version. I have since learned that for a pure quality oil, you are going to pay more. It takes POUNDS (yes, I said POUNDS) of leaves to extract that little bit of oil in that tiny bottle.

For potency assurance, be sure to buy Oregano Essential Oil from a reputable company.  It is not diluted with a carrier oil and when using, it is easier to determine the proper dosage. I don’t have a preference at this time, but there are numerous wonderful sources that can be found through friends or online.

Oil of Oregano is already diluted with a carrier oil, but the ratio may be questionable. They are usually labeled for external use only or NOT for internal use.

You might even find one that is labeled for aromatherapy only. They make your home smell amazing!

How to Use Oregano Oil

This is a HOT oil. Do not use undiluted. It WILL burn your skin and it WILL burn your mouth, if not diluted! Trust me, I tested it for you.Essential Oils Bottles,

  • To use topically, mix 1 part oregano oil to 3 parts carrier oil (such as coconut oil or olive oil). For ease of application, I put mine in a bottle with roller-ball top. Apply to bottom of feet or affected area. Oregano Oil is not recommended for open wounds.
  • Diffuse a couple of drops in water for inhalation benefits. Good for the whole family during cold and flu season!
  • Add a few drops to water in a spray bottle as a germ fighter to clean surfaces.
  • Oregano Oil Capsules, Pills, and Tablets – follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Orally, 4 drops in water or tomato juice, 4 times daily for 10 days. (With one brand, I used tomato juice. Another brand, I had to put the drops in a veggie cap to avoid burning my mouth). Do not exceed 600 mg a day.
  • As a preventive measure, take 1 or 2 drops daily.

You could also grow your own oregano and use lots of fresh or dried oregano in your meals for healthy benefits. It’s popular in Italian, Latin and Mediterranean cooking.

Although it seems to be a cure all, please research and follow directions from reliable sources.  For more information, this is one of my favorites links:

  1. Really interesting info! Although I have a bottle of oregano oil and enjoy it for it’s amazing scent, I never really knew it had so many uses. I’m coming down with a cold, so I’m going to test it out right away.
