Easy Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes

Did you know you can “bake” potatoes in a slow cooker? It makes preparing dinner so much easier! Technically, they aren’t “baked”, but the potatoes are moist and flavorful, and every bit as good as oven-baked potatoes. They also have kind of a roasted flavor. This works for all kinds of potatoes and you don’t even need foil!

This is a great way to do a little prep, too! Have baked potatoes the first night, then the next day make mashed potatoes for a family meal. Or if you need a huge batch of mashed potatoes or potato salad for a get-together, this is an easy way to cook a large number of easy to peel potatoes.

Turning the oven on really heats up the house. Although the additional heat is welcomed on cold winter days, it’s suffocating in the summer. So when we wanted baked potatoes we’d throw a couple in the microwave. That was perfect for us to make quick meals until the microwave bit the dust, and we had to learn how to live without a microwave.

Now when we want baked potatoes, I’ll put them in the slow cooker earlier in the day, then at dinner time we cook meat in the NuWave Oven or on the George Foreman Indoor Grill while vegetables are heating up on the stove top. How easy is that?

How to Bake Potatoes in a Slow Cooker

Oops! I forgot to add to the printable recipe to poke each potato a couple of times with a fork before baking. Be sure to note that if you print the recipe.

  • potatoes, up to 6 or 8, depending on size
  • olive oil, vegetable oil or a non-stick cooking spray
  • sea salt or kosher salt

  1. Wash and scrub the potatoes
  2. Oil the inside of your slow cooker, or spray with a non-stick cooking spray. I poured a tablespoon or so of oil in the bottom of the crock, then used a basting brush to coat the bottom and sides.
  3. Coat the clean potatoes with oil and put in the slow cooker, I used the basting brush to coat the potatoes with oil from the bottom of the crock.
  4. Sprinkle sea salt or kosher salt on each potato after oiling. Poke each potato a couple of times with a fork.
  5. Cook on HIGH for 4 – 5 hours, or LOW for about 8 -9 hours. It helps to shuffle the potatoes around about halfway through cooking, but it’s not essential. Smaller potatoes won’t take as long to cook through.

I have two trusty old Hamilton Beach Slow Cookers. There are a bunch of my favorite slow cooker recipes on this blog. The slow cookers are wonderful for making meals that don’t need babysitting, stress free meal preparations for busy days, plus making meal starters to stock the freezer.

We’ve had our NuWave Oven for years and use it once or twice a day, almost everyday. Sometimes more often since we don’t have the microwave anymore. Its like a large air-fryer that oven-fries, bakes, grills, toasts, re-heats leftovers and even makes restaurant quality Panins. It’s also pretty handy to take out on the porch for meals when I don’t want to be cooped up in the house.

Our’s is black, but otherwise it’s just like this George Foreman Indoor Grill. Some of the newer ones have features like removable plates, but we have never had a problem cleaning ours in just a matter of minutes. It’s so much easier to cook meats to the right temperature. Hubby grills all kinds of meat, such as steaks, pork chops, chicken, hamburgers with grilled onions, smoked sausage with grilled bell peppers and onions.
